I’ve been seeing a lot of posts in the Facebook groups I’ve become a part of—families going through the same things we did. Some are just finding out their child’s diagnosis, others are preparing for surgery. A few have asked whether we shared our journey publicly or kept it just within our family.
I remember feeling that exact same way. I almost didn’t share Callan’s story because I didn’t know what to expect from people—what they might think, or how they’d react. I worried about the questions, like why we chose surgery or why we moved forward with amputation.
But honestly, I wouldn’t have done it any other way.
That entire 8-hour surgery—what his surgeons called “grueling”—was one of the most emotional and difficult experiences we’ve ever gone through. And that doesn’t even include the 32 days in a spica cast.
Fast forward just a few months, and he’s doing things we once only hoped for. He’s taking steps. He’s walking.
Our day-to-day life may look different from others, but we’re learning to embrace our new normal.
Looking back, I’m so thankful we chose to share our story. It’s been empowering. It’s given us strength on the hard, exhausting days. It keeps us going and reminds us why we push forward for him every single day.
So if you’re unsure—share your story. You never know who it might help. Keep spreading awareness for others.
